Mission Statement
The mission of the Memorial Union Craft Center is to support and promote a creative outlet of expression for students and the other members of the University community by providing a dynamic environment, resources and arts programs in which people can foster their own creativity.

History

The Craft Center began in the nearly 1970’s with a handful of students in a small basement room off the MU Ballroom; jewelry & lapidary were popular crafts at this time. The Craft Centers popularity prompted an expansion and move to a new location in the MU East/Snell Hall in 1977; increasing it square footage to 4,600 square feet of space. Many new programs were offered; most popular was the addition of ceramics and photography. Yet another expansion occurred in 1996, occupying what had been The Gallery, a former eatery, into what we refer to as our South Classroom.

Today, the Craft Center comprises 10,000 square feet of artist studio space, offering programs in: ceramics, black & white and digital photography, textiles (weaving, sewing & spinning), silk screening glass, flameworking, jewelry & metal work, woodworking and matting area. We are open 7 days a week, offering over 2,500 hours of formal classes and workshops per year. In addition, the Craft Center offers 57 hours open studio time per week to its members.

Future Plans

The OSU Craft Center will be relocating in December 2014 to the Student Experience Center, a student funded new construction project, that will open for Winter term 2015. For more information about the SEC go to:
