Decades of Loving Art: works from the Collection of Phillip McClain
Winter 2026
OSU Memorial Union’s new
Phillip R. McClain Collection
This display is part of a larger body of work obtained during the lifetime of Phillip R. McClain (Phil), who kindly bequeathed a large part of his beloved art collection to the Memorial Union upon his death in July, 2024.
The work spans decades, and though predominantly by regional artists, Phil also purchased artwork on his travels. We are grateful to be the recipients of such an expansive and relevant body of work. Phil had great taste! Special thanks go to his sister, Diane Hatai, who was the executor of his will and worked diligently to get the work to the Memorial Union.
A bit more about Phil:
Phillip was born January 20, 1957, in Tacoma, Washington – along with his twin brother, Gilbert – the son of Frank Gordon McClain and Eunice Mae (Meredith) McClain.
He was a 1975 graduate of Forest Grove High School, and received a B.S. in Journalism from Oregon State University in 1980. After graduating from OSU, Phillip spent his entire professional career working in various roles for OSU Student Media, until his retirement in 2014, from his final position at OSU as the Student Media Publications Production Manager. Phil left lasting impacts on the students that he worked with for decades, and is remembered with affection and gratitude.
